Third Quarter Barrage Carried Warde Boys' Cagers to Easy Win Over Ludlowe 45 Years Ago Today

The Andrew Warde High School boys' basketball team broke open a close game with a 27-point third quarter and went on to rout cross-town rival Roger Ludlowe, 66-43, on this date, Friday, January 6, 1967, at the Tigers' gymnasium.

The score was tied at 29 apiece at halftime, but coach Wes Aldrich's team connected for 27 points in the third quarter, including 12 by Dan Haines, while the Tigers were able to muster only three points, all by Frank Koscil.

Ludlowe shot a paltry 26 percent from the floor with an 18-for-68 performance, while Warde made good on 47 percent of its shots with 28 baskets in 59 attempts.

Big Jim Howard tallied 13 points for Warde in the first half, while Koscil had nine for the hosts.

Doug Wilcox and Rich Fekete matched four point performances in the final stanza, but the outcome of the contest was no longer in doubt by that time.

The Crimson Eagles enjoyed an edge in rebounding and canned 10 free throws in 18 attempts, while Ludlowe converted seven of 13 foul shots.

Warde also captured the junior varsity contest, 57-45, as Jay Penish tallied 20 points.
